I've always been creative and have enjoyed crafting for as long as I can remember. My other great passion is for the outdoors. Since gaining a Biology degree from the University of Exeter I have worked in outdoor education and conservation and I love learning about wildlife and plants.
Soap making combines chemistry and creativity and I'm very lucky to have both a creative side and a scientific side in me. So, when I discovered soap making it immediately turned into an obsession. I love choosing ingredients for their natural skin loving properties and strive to ensure all of our products are as natural as possible.
Initially I gave my goodies to family and friends as gifts; they went down so well they encouraged me to start selling my natural cosmetics, so Boo Cottage Botanicals was born in our country kitchen in Somerset.
All of our handcrafted soaps contain Extra Virgin Olive oil and Coconut oil. We add Cocoa butter, Beeswax and luxury oils such as Shea butter, Mango butter or Sweet Almond oil. We use a very traditional method called 'cold process'. This is where the oils and butters are gently melted and mixed with lye, producing soap. The liquid soap is poured into moulds and left to harden overnight before we slice them into bars and they are left to cure for 6 weeks. This curing time is important to ensure you end up with a mild and long lasting bar of soap.
Our lip balms contain Beeswax, Coconut oil, Sweet Almond oil and Cocoa butter which are gently melted together and poured into tins the perfect size for your pocket.
We use natural colourants in our products such as clays, herbs, flowers and a variety of spices which we infuse in oil or, alternatively, add directly to the product. For fragrance, we only ever use essential oils. These are carefully selected for their therapeutic properties and we hand blend them to make our unique scents. We have two soaps and one lip balm that are fragrance and colourant free for people with especially sensitive skin.
All of our products undergo rigorous testing before going on sale; we are a member of the Guild of Craft Soap and Toiletry Makers.
